Refining

Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company (JPRC) located in Zarqa city is refining crude oil received in Aqaba port tanks by three main distillation units, with maximum refining capacity around 5 million tons of crude oil per year, to produce a wide range of products starting from the light product (liquefied petroleum gas) and ending with the heavy products (asphalt grades) for paving of roads and insulation. Crude oil separates into several cuts that are processed in downstream treating units, on the other hand the heavy cuts are processed by cracking units (Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCC) and Hydrocracking Unit; where these two units converts heavy cuts into lighter and more valuable products.

The petroleum products are mainly a set of different types of highly flammable liquid materials called (fuel); the liquefied petroleum gas, gasoline (RON 90 & 95), kerosene, Avtur (special and normal), diesel (special and regular) and fuel oil, in addition to Asphalt grades used in paving roads and infrastructure.

JPRC has a plant for mixing and packaging mineral oils, since the Refinery does not produce base oils used in the manufacture of lubricants; however, the Company imports these oils, mix and package them in containers of various sizes.

The Refinery has the ability to produce electrical power, and to treat water for industrial and service uses.

Boilers system in offsite units produces high pressure steam that is used in special turbines to generate electrical energy for electrical motors in the process units. There is an electrical connection network between the Refinery and National Electric Power Company.

JPRC operates additional activities such as the rehabilitation of liquefied gas cylinders, as well as the supervision of supplying petroleum products by Jordan Petroleum Products Marketing Company (Jopetrol) which is a branch of Jordan Refinery Company.

Since JPRC is the only Refinery in Jordan, it was expanded on several stages to meet the local demands of petroleum products, where the Company started its production in 1962 through the following units:

Crude Distillation Unit No. 1; with capacity of 1000 ton per day, later on revamped to 2400 ton per day.

Vacuum Distillation Unit No. 1; with capacity of 350 ton per day, later on revamped to 1200 ton per day of the residue of crude distillation units no. 1,2 and 3.

Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU); with capacity of 200 ton per day, later on revamped to 600 ton per day of heavy gas oil.

Asphalt Production Unit No. 1; with capacity of 100 ton per day, later on revamped to 300 ton per day

Due to increase of petroleum products consumption in local market over the years, it was necessary for JPRC to expand and develop its refining activities to comply with this increment by revamping existing units and introducing new units as follow:

Crude Distillation Unit No. 2; with capacity of 1100 ton per day, later on revamped to 1600 ton per day.

Crude Distillation Unit No. 3; with capacity of 6200 ton per day, later on revamped to 10000 ton per day.

Vacuum Distillation Unit No. 2; with capacity of 1100 ton per day, later on revamped to 2400 ton per day of the residue of crude distillation units no. 1,2 and 3.

Naphtha Hydrotreater Unit; with capacity of 1350 ton per day, later on revamped to 2100 ton per day of light naphtha cut of crude distillation units no. 1,2 and 3.

Platforming Unit; with capacity of 1000 ton per day, later on revamped to 1400 ton per day. Producing a gasoline of high octane number.

Hydrocracking Unit; with capacity of 635 ton per day, later on revamped to 850 ton per day. The unit has ability to remove sulfur and convert heavy cuts into lighter and more valuable products.

Asphalt Production Unit No. 2; with capacity of 500 ton per day.

Two Steam Boilers with a production capacity of 22 tons steam per hour for each, and five Steam Boilers with a production capacity of 50 tons steam per hour for each.

Two Steam Turbines Power Generators operated by high pressure steam to produce electrical power of 6 MW for each.

Diesel Turbine Power Generator operated by diesel fuel to produce electrical power of 2.5 MW used for emergency.

Industrial Waste Water Treatment Plant, with a capacity of 136 cubic meter per hour, the effluent water used for irrigation.

Sulfur Recovery Unit, with maximum production capacity of 23 tons sulfur per day. The unit has been commissioning in 2015 to reduce flue gas emissions.

The petroleum products are distributed to the local market by three marketing companies, one of them is Jordan Petroleum Products Marketing Company (Jopetrol) which is a branch of Jordan Refinery Company. The products are transported by tankers.

JPRC has three filling stations for Liquefied Petroleum Gas "LPG", where LPG is filled and distributed as follow:-

Refinery Site / Zarqa gas filling station for Zarqa, Mafraq and Jerash.

Salah Al-Din gas filling station for north regions of Jordan.

Amman gas filling station for Amman and south regions of Jordan.
